Huge changes for Groynes area
The Council’s Parks and Waterway five-year concept plan for The Groynes is part of a Waimakariri regional park that will involve Environment Canterbury, the Clearwater Resort, and the Isaac Trust. The $100 million Clearwater Resort will feature an international golf course and the Isaac Trust plans a recreational area many times bigger than Hagley Park and include an international rowing course. The Groynes redevelopment will tie in with the large developments around it and in time the whole area will be a "recreational jewel north of the city." The Groynes’ draft plan has been issued for public comment. This is the first development plan since The Groynes was formed about 50 years ago.Today the area attracts more than 500,000 visitors a year and is an important City Council reserve. The Belfast Pony Club has been relocated already allowing for expansion of new public areas to the north-east. It is possible that the New Zealand Fish and Game Council may establish its headquarters at The Groynes in a new building incorporating the park rangers, enhanced customer services and information. With some of the best fly fishing areas in Christchurch, this partnership should make the Groynes the home of fishing. Other proposed changes include a new entrance at Dickeys Road, the present entrance in Johns Rd moved, a network of new tracks, new roads and bridges, native planting along waterways and more picnic areas. Fresh water swimming areas could be created and a mini-golf concession included. Other new features will include a dog park and a Girl Guide camp. The Groynes will become to the north of the city what Victoria Park is to the Port Hills. The development of The Groynes will be carried out in a comprehensive partnership with surrounding recreational areas that include the Rotokohatu Reserve, Clearwater Resort, the Isaac Trust land, including Peacock Springs, McLeans Island and the extensive Environment Canterbury river banks south of the Waimakariri River.
