Historic Patterson House for lease

Public expressions of a commercial interest in the Halswell Quarry manager’s house are being sought by the City Council before the end ofthe year.

The Council wants the house to complement the Quarry Park activities, retain the historic and botanical nature of the site, and, if possible, incorporate an element of community use.

The substantial stone villa was built in 1927 and is known as the Patterson House as it was the home of Ned Patterson, the long-time quarry manager, and his family.

Traces of an impressive rock garden are still visible.

The house and garden are registered as a category two historic place under the Historic Places Act.

The Halswell Quarry Park is also the site ofthe Sister Cities Gardens Park and the Patterson House will be formed as part of the Christchurch, England, garden.

The house, now not in use, will lend itself to a commercial or other use that will complement the quarry park activities and also retain the historic and botanical nature of the house site.

Any alterations and upgrading needed for a change in use will need to meet the requirements of the Council’s draft Conservation Plan.

A survey of Kennedys Bush Road residents indicates that there is insufficient use for the house to be retained solely as a community use but there is support for a café, possibly in conjunction with a community use.
