Heritage Park proposed A heritage park is proposed on 73 hectares near Ferrymead Historic Park and could include sports grounds, a golf course and driving range, a Maori village and hot pools. The suggested name is the Heathcote Heritage Park and while the recreation potential is high, the first City Council objective relates to waterway and flood plain management. A concept plan has waterways surrounded by walkways, a cycle track, and pony trails linking the community with the Heathcote River and Port Hills. Doug and Mike Tamaki of Rotorua have put the Maori village proposal before the Council. They want to build a village with a restaurant, market place, a stage, a meeting house, "experience" building and a museum-theatre. The brothers told the Council that they want their village and Ferrymead Historic Park to work hand in hand with cultural, entertainment and educational presentations. The combined presentation would be the only one in New Zealand. The village had a potential for 120 jobs, with 80 initially, and if approved it could be operational by August next year. |
