Strong support for school speed zones

 School Zone Sign
The 40kmh part-time school speed zones continue to be popular with the Christchurch public.

These signs were installed outside half a dozen city schools more than a year ago on a trial basis.

Evaluations carried out by the City Council show strong public support. It sought feedback from school communities and drivers.

This support is consistent with high levels of compliance found by speed surveys carried out by the Land Transport Safety Authority.

The Council will be reporting on the trial to the LTSA with a view to continuing the schools’ speed zone programme.

The electronic signs were developed in Christchurch and are used twice a day, for 25 minutes before and after school.
