'Heritage Park' proposed for valley

Heathcote Valley Heritage Park - Draft Development ProposalThe wider Heathcote community has helped to shape the concept for an exciting new Heritage Park in the Heathcote Valley.

Workshops and discussions have been held with local residents about the future for the area of land on the valley floor next to the Heathcote River. Public land in the valley now totals 93 hectares, including Ferrymead Historic Park. There are proposals to restore habitat for wildlife, create public areas for enjoyment, and provide features to attract tourists.

Recent developments include:
  • Christchurch City Council purchase of 23.5 hectares from the Lyttelton Port Company.
  • Negotiations for City Council lease of land west of Ferrymead for a golf course and golf driving range.
  • Negotiations for City Council lease of land east of Ferrymead for the Tamaki Cultural Village experience.
While plans for the recently acquired land from the Port Company are still to be developed, plans for the golf course and golf driving range are underway. The Cultural Village concept plans are also underway and will be created by Tamaki Tours from Rotorua. The Cultural Village experience will compliment the existing Ferrymead Historic Park. Other features of the Heathcote Heritage Park include plans for the Council to:
  • Develop walk/cycleways, horse and pony trails and picnic areas.
  • Restore waterways and create improved habitats for wildlife.
  • Develop two full-sized sports fields next to Bridle Path Road, with access off Ferrymead Park Drive.

A colour concept plan of the park, providing more details, is available from Christchurch City Council — Civic Offices and Linwood Service Centre. The public is invited to participate in the current consultation and planning phase of the heritage park. As further plans are developed, updates will be provided and further input sought.

Please provide comments or suggestions, and contact us with your questions about the proposed concept, before 28 February 2002.
