A City Council project that gave new life to the Curator’s House in the Botanic Gardens has won a New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Resene Award for architecture. The combined efforts of the Council, the Botanical Epicurean Company and the Friends of the Gardens transformed the house and gardens into an attractive asset.

The house was built in 1920 as the residence of the Gardens’ curator. It underwent lengthy renovation, before reopening in June last year as a restaurant and educational garden facility. Judges commended the architects, Wilkie and Bruce, the Council, the owners, and the Botanical Epicurean Company, the restaurant proprietor, for the reworking of the building, with a category two heritage status.

They added: "The...conversion...(has) been carefully integrated, while maintaining the building’s historic qualities in a contemporary and refreshing manner."
