Trees for Port Hills Five thousand native trees will be planted by the Council’s Port Hills Ranger Service between July and mid-August — when the rain arrives. After the October storm several areas were left bare after many pine trees were uprooted. Behind the Visitors’ Centre in Victoria Park and in Thomsons Reserve, on the corner of the Summit Road below the Sugarloaf, are two of the main storm-damaged areas to be planted. The area directly below the Sign of the Kiwi car park will also be planted to enhance the car park and the new multi-use track. Silver tussocks will be planted in Victoria Park Road beside the new walking track. Volunteers play a large part in the revegetation of the Port Hills and volunteers are wanted to help with planting on Sundays in July. All plantings make a valuable contribution to returning native vegetation to the hills, providing a food source for native birds, reptiles and insects.
