Riccarton-Wigram Neighbourhood News Updates Templeton area flood scheme developed A drainage scheme has been developed for the Templeton area to prevent surface flooding and stormwater disposal in wet weather. A feature of the City Council’s Templeton Stormwater Management Scheme will be at the Railway Terrace site. Because of its prominence as the entry point in Templeton, over the railway line and into the township, this will include a retention basis with landscaping. The residential area has been "divided" into a number of individual catchment areas. Stormwater will be "processed" within each area through soakage chambers, retention basins or a combination of both. Construction at the first sites will start soon with the intention to have the full scheme in place within five years. Peverel St first living street Peverel Street, Riccarton, is officially the city’s first living street. The street has been given a facelift under the City Council’s new Living Streets policy. This means that the City Streets Unit is moving away from the traditional straight streets with traffic restraints, such as road humps to slow traffic. A function was held on 22 May to mark the occasion. It is believed that more carved alignment and narrowing of the roadway achieves a more pleasant environment for both the residents and road users. It also reduces traffic speeds. The width and alignment of the road have been changed and, at the same time, captured the historical significance of the street with water features and information boards. Also, the street includes a large input from local children through artwork. Major reserve planned for Picton Avenue A major reserve is planned for Picton Avenue, Riccarton, and major developments will take place at Halswell Domain and Halswell Quarry. These are included in the Parks and Waterways Unit capital works programme for the Riccarton and Wigram wards. Planned work also includes minor landscaping in the wards, such as at Carmen Reserve and Ferrier Park. An ongoing programme of playground replacements and upgrading are scheduled, including Shamrock Reserve. Included in the waterways and wetlands enhancement programme are the Peer Street Reserve, and the Nottingham, Knights and Ilam streams and other sites in the Halswell-Wigram area. |
