Award for Fendalton-Papanui cycle way

An Environmental Award has been given to the City Council for the cycle way through Fendalton and Papanui.

The Rotary Club of Papanui presented the award "in appreciation of an outstanding contribution to the local environment."

The cycle way runs from Fendalton Road in the south to Northcote Road in the north.

Concept Developed In 1970s
The combined pedestrian-cycle way that runs most of its length along the railway line was raised as a concept in the late 1970s.

By the early 1980s half, from St James Park to Northcote Road, had been developed.

Then the project was revised in 1996 and, after five years of planning, design, consultation, the cycle way was built in several stages between St James Park and Fendalton Road.

It is a one-of-a-kind facility in Christchurch and possibly in New Zealand.
