Musical celebration of 150th anniversary Christchurch Civic Music Council has organised a musical celebration of Canterbury’s 150th anniversary, opening with a concert in the Town Hall on Saturday, 10 March. The opening concert is described as "a demonstration of the great depth of music making in Christchurch". A choir drawn from 13 local choirs, an orchestra drawn from five orchestras and a representative band will perform. Christchurch-born, Sydney-based clarinettist Mark Walton will play John Ritchie’s "Concertino for Clarinet" and "Romance for Alto Sax" by Ronald Binge. The second major concert of the Canterbury Sesquicentenary Music Festival is the 34th National Concerto Competition (piano) on 17 March in the Town Hall. The music council started this event in 1968 and it alternates between pianists and instrumentalists. Many of its participants have gone on to make successful careers in music. The finalists this year include two Christchurch pianists: Kirsten Simpson, who will play Piano Concerto No. 5 by Saint-Saens, and Hamish Robb, who will play Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The festival finale is Sir William Walton’s dramatic "Belshazzar’s Feast", conducted by Brian Law, on 24 March (Christchurch Town Hall).
