Key issues facing Council


The forecast of the financial impact of the Council’s proposed operations and capital expenditure over the next 10 years is contained in the Strategic Statement.

It summarises the reasons why the Council engages in its various activities and outlines the important assumptions and key indicators about the Christchurch and regional economy that are the "drivers" of the strategy.

The strategic statement is reviewed every three years. The Long-term financial strategy forecasts all the budgeted operational requirements, the capital expenditure and the funding needs for the next 10 years in the one statement.

Some of the key issues facing the Council in the next 10 years are: Land for urban development and servicing new areas as they are occupied.

Facilitating social, environmental and economic needs arising from community change.

Improving the city infrastructure to meet the needs of the expanded community and the sustainable management of resources such as water, sewerage, refuse disposal, land drainage and parks.

Managing the services in a sustainable way.

Facilitating and leading change in the city so that the whole community functions in a sustainable way Refuse disposal through the development of a new landfill.

Completing new community facilities, including the new art gallery.
