Feedback cites transport as big issue

When the public was asked for views on central-city revitalisation the response was positive and wide ranging, with more than 1000 submissions.

As well, more than 30 public meetings were held.

Overwhelmingly the responses called for improved transport in the city centre.

Transport access, along with improved parking, was a main issue identified in feedback from residents. A majority agreed with increased development in the city centre, and agreed it should focus to the east of Colombo Street

Other issues raised included safety, improvements in Cathedral Square, free parking and the preservation of historic buildings. Others wanted more modern housing developments.

More quality shops were needed along with more trees, green areas and flowers.

More activities, such as festivals, were called for and others wanted more jobs, especially for students after school

Ideas raised by the public submissions will be used in the central city strategy

Recommended short-term priority concepts recommended to the City Council include the forming of a retail association for the central city and a High Street precinct project.

Other priorities are emphasis on creating new park and squares on the east side of Colombo Street and one-hour free parking in some Council off-street car parks.

It is recommended that an investigation be made into swapping the one-way streets of Lichfield and Tuam streets.

Another priority was a one-stop shop revitalisation project team.
