Special environmental awards this year Special environmental awards will be made this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canterbury. They will be held at the same time as the annual environmental awards. The special awards will embrace the historical nature of the city since its formation. It will be in two sections: Built and Natural. Nominations are being sought and already some have been made. In the Built Environment 1850-1900 are the original Government Buildings and the Post Office; 1900-1950 are the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Maddison's Government Buildings and the Christ's College dining hall; and 1950-2000 the Lyttelton Road Tunnel. In the Natural Environment section 1850-1900 Riccarton Bush; 1900-1950 Poplars crescent, Oxford Terrace. Nominations are also being sought for the third annual Environmental Awards, which recognise outstanding contributions to the Built, Natural or Services to the environment of the city. In 1998 the winners were Peacock Springs and Christ's College and last year the winners were the Broadoaks housing subdivision, Riccarton Bush, and the Summit Road Society. Each winner will receive an engraved medallion, a certificate, and, where appropriate a plaque to be placed on the site of the project.
