Chairman’s message . . . Community board at heart of local government Chairman Mike Mora says the community board is the key to true local government. He says the board has a wide range of delegated powers relating to local matters, with an advocacy-advisory role in relation to metropolitan issues affecting the community. The board seeks views of residents to identify issues through residents' associations, neighbourhood groups and public meetings. Service Centre staff then help to achieve the goals of residents, he says. Any suggestions for improving the neighbourhood should be taken to the board. "We rely on your input, knowledge and ideas," Mr Mora says. The Riccarton-Wigram Advocacy Team, based at the Sockburn Service Centre, serves as part of an integrated, community-based Council unit responsible for building relationships with citizens and communities. The Community Advocate, Martin Maguire, says that Council Advocates ensure that information and outcomes are known and that residents are provided with access to the Council's decision-making process. The Advocacy Team also holds a responsibility for community development at a local level, Mr Maguire says. |
