COUNCIL NOTICEBOARD Another step to zero waste A new service providing wheelie bins especially for garden waste will help achieve Christchurch's goal of zero waste to the landfill by 2020. Launched last month and run by Waste Management Ltd, the service provides wheelie bins through out the city for garden prunings and clippings. It costs $150 a year or from $2.31 a week. The waste is taken to the Council composting facility and Living Earth Ltd markets the finished compost. Rob Fenwick, of Living Earth, told those at the launch in Fendalton (where bin trials have been done), that Christchurch City Council led New Zealand in the quest for zero waste. Councillor Denis O'Rourke, chairman of both the Council special composting committee and Canterbury Trans Waste Ltd, said every resident's participation and co-operation was needed. Leisure for older adults Activities from sing- alongs to ten pin bowling and garden visits are favourites at the Shirley Leisure Club for Older Adults. The group meets at Shirley Community Center on Wednesday afternoons, 1- 3pm, during school terms. “It’s a chance to try a new activity and meet new people,” says community recreation advisor Maria Moran. New Redwood group gives residents voice Traffic congestion and Papanui Swimming Pool's future are two topics of interest and concern for the newly-formed Redwood Residents' Association. Chairman John Saxton says the association wants to determine what plans are being made to solve growing traffic congestion problems in the area and what will be the long-term future of the pool, which needs significant improvements. These issues also affect residents outside Redwood-Papanui. An initiative of Shirley-Papanui Community Board, the association has a committee of volunteers who will liaise closely with Papanui Service Centre community development adviser Bruce Meder. "A major objective is to foster two-way communication with the Council," says John. The association will be seeking local business support to finance flyers publicising residents' needs and concerns.
