Simple rules for keeping animals The Christchurch City Animals (Other than Dogs) Bylaw 2000 came into force on 1 November. It is a new bylaw governing the keeping of animals in the city and is much simpler than previous bylaws. It has removed the need for licences or permits and sets down general conditions. Animals must be kept in conditions that not "offensive, injurious to health or dangerous". They must have access to sufficient food, water and appropriate, adequate exercise. Pigs can only be kept on land zoned rural or Living Hills B. Rabbits, ferrets, stoats and weasels can be kept if they are restrained or confined to prevent their escape. Similar requirements apply to stock, including horses, cattle and sheep. Killing stock on land zoned Living is not permitted without written approval from the Council.
