Parenting: towards a better family life Hot on the heels of a parenting directory comes an event focusing on the importance of parenting. "Parenting Programmes and Support Services A Christchurch Directory" was launched by the Councils childrens advocacy office at the end of last month. It is the second edition of the directory and contains new sections, such as dealing with stress, raising your adolescent, caring fathers and relief for caregivers. Ian Grant, of the Parenting with Confidence organisation, says he will urge Auckland City Council to produce a similar book. "It is a brilliant idea and evidence that Christchurch is a city that can turn things around. "I am convinced that if we do not give people skills they become victims. But Christchurch is doing a great job out there." Ian and his wife Mary will be keynote speakers during Parenting Week 2000, which will be held in Christchurch from 4 to 10 September. The aim of the week is to provide a citywide focus on the importance of quality parenting, says Council childrens advocate Lyn Campbell. "Parenting is foundational toproper living. It impacts on the family and also the community. "It is a most demanding role, requiring dedication, skill, time andhigh value. The wider community has an important role in support and encouragement." Parenting Week will focus on what we can do together to support parents in their role. It aims to bring the local community together to raise awareness, educate, encourage and celebrate. It will be funded by the childrens advocacy office. Details are being planned.
