Memento of maritime history

A piece of the chequered history of Sumner lifeboat sheds has gone. However, the Shag Rock boatshed will not be forgotten.

Topsy Rules of Sumner Historical Society say steps to the shed, built in the Depression years, will be preserved and a plaque erected to mark the site.

Various lifeboats have been housed on different sites in Sumner.

The Shag Rock site was used from 1940 to late 1962, when Christchurch City Council provided a boatshed and slipway at Scarborough.

The Shag Rock site was never ideal because the rescue boat could not be launched for three hours at low tide.

Sea cadets of TS Cornwall later used the boatshed.
