Upgrade will improve quality of effluent

Upgrade will improve quality of effluent The $33.7 million upgrade for the plant will improve the quality of the effluent.

New screens installed at the beginning of the process take out more rags than the old screens.

A major part of the upgrade is the conversion of the secondary sedimentation tanks to aeration basins that will see air pumped into the effluent to achieve higher pollution removal.

Circular clarifiers will be installed and these will produce a much clearer effluent and the oxidation ponds will be altered to improve the flow patterns that will ensure that more bugs are killed.

A new building is being provided with machinery to thicken the sludge so it is better suited for the digestion process before use on land as a fertiliser and soil conditioner.

Some odours will continue while the plant conversion takes place but ultimately the plant will have increased capacity and operational flexibility.
