40kmh limits to be trialled near five local schools

TAKE CARE
Part-time 40kmh speed limits will be trialled near five Christchurch schools from 26 January next year in an effort to improve road safety especially for children.

The trial is a joint project involving the Council and Transit New Zealand, in partnership with the Police and Land Transport Safety Authority.

The schools are Belfast Primary, Halswell Primary, Branston Intermediate, Bishopdale Primary and Harewood Primary.

New traffic control devices will be installed in January, before the school term starts. There will be permanent signs warning drivers that they are entering school speed zones and illuminated 40kmh speed signs which will operate only during designated times. When the illuminated signs are not operating the normal posted speed limit will apply. Research has shown that initiatives taken to improve the safety of vulnerable road users, such as children, have a positive impact on everyone.
