TV2 KidsFest: double delight
New Zealand’s biggest children’s festival, the Christchurch City Council-organised TV2 KidsFest, doubles in fun this year.
It will extend from eight days to two weeks (26 June to 9 July), to meet the huge demand from children eager to take part.
Last year the festival comprised more than 100 events, involving 34,500 participants.

Activities on offer this year include art and craft workshops, sports, plays, cultural activities, concerts and “behind the scenes” tours of places such as the Meadow Fresh milk factory and Christchurch Cathedral.

KidsFest programmes will be distributed to schools, playcentres and libraries throughout the city early next month.
Bookings open on Saturday, 12 June.

New Brighton library looking shipshape!
New Brighton’s ship-shaped Pier Terminus building, which is rapidly being constructed on the shore side of the New Brighton Pier, is set to hold a new and innovative community library.
The library will have a number of unique features including the “gantry” — a youth facility with interactive activities including simulation games, videos and visual displays.
The Media Centre is another exciting concept which gives groups and individuals the opportunity to use computers, and learn how to make the most of new technology. And the PAD — Play and Display — is a special area designed to host activities and exhibits for children and the general community.
The library, expected to open in late July, will be extending its opening hours to a seven-day service, year-round, with slightly longer hours in the summer.

New playground for Muir Park
Play equipment in Muir Park, Halswell, will be upgraded following a positive response from local residents.
More than 200 people gave the council their views on the type of equipment they preferred and for which age group.
Most wanted a structure similar to what is in the Botanic Gardens.
An even number indicated the equipment should be suitable for two to six-year-olds and six to 12-year-olds.
A multi activity structure will be installed this month, designed to NZ Safety Standards.
It will be in muted colours so it looks “in harmony” with the reserve.

Fifteen young people swapped boredom for “board-dom” recently on a skateboard skills course organised by Christchurch City Council’s Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board.
Developed to help provide leisure opportunities, the course was run in response to needs identified by youngsters in the east of our City.
Under the expert guidance of two skilled and experienced boarders, the eight week course took place at the Linwood Service Centre.

‘Own home’ for Waltham community
The Council has bought a house at Hastings St East for the Waltham community cottage.
Previously Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board rented a house for Waltham people to use.
“We’ve been going nearly nine years and having our own building is a natural progression,” says co-ordinator Annette Bunting.
The cottage is a focal point for people to gather to exchange information and share resources. A newsletter from the cottage is distributed to people in the neighbourhood three times a year.
Other things that happen there include outings for older people, a toy library, play groups, children’s holiday programmes and a community gardening project.
“People are welcome to come and see what we’re all about,” says Annette.
