Council Plan for City

The City Council is delivering a higher standard than ever before on basic services such as roads, rubbish, parks and water.

On 31 July the City Council met and passed the Christchurch City Council Plan: 1997 Edition which allocates the Council's budget for the year. The proposals in the Draft Plan were changed, based on submissions received. A fuller summary of what was in the Draft Plan was in the May City Scene.

Initiatives such as the new Bromley Treatment Plant upgrade, the social initiatives, redeveloping Cathedral Square and saving historic buildings were all in the plan.

In addition new items were added to the budget on 31 July, these were:

• $2.42 million on initiatives to reduce smog (see information on page 2)
• $100,000 allocated for youth drug education work.
• $80,000 for the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
• $30,000 contribution to the Festival of Japan.
• $20,000 contribution to the artist in residence scheme at the Arts Centre.
• $50,000 to ensure we have a Coca Cola Christmas in the Park this year.
• $335,000 filtration upgrades at Jellie Park and Wharanui Pools.
• $20,000 to investigate the effects on residents of cellphone towers, radio and other sources of radiation.
