The housing section of the Property Unit was recently awarded a commendation from the Christchurch Safer Community Council in recognition of a neighbourhood-friendly development at G F Allen Courts, Sumner.
The commendation was for the design of the units, which is in line with the principles of crime prevention through environmental design. This approach to crime prevention aims to remove the fear and actual possibility of becoming a victim of crime through environmental improvements.
The G F Allen Courts show good design because they improve informal surveillance of the street. The units are not hidden away behind high fences and this gives the residents the chance to keep an eye on the neighbourhood. This is a powerful deterrent to potential criminals. In addition, the residents of G F Allen Courts have made a wonderful effort in beautifying the street frontage of the courts, showing that they, too, care for their neighbourhood.
