Turning Point 2000 Vision
To foster closer relationships within the
community as we look back over our past, celebrate our present, and look forward to the
future.
Background
Initiated and core funded by
Christchurch City Council, Turning Point 2000's focus is to ensure that Christchurch and
Canterbury have the progressive leadership and forward planning to organise celebrations
for the year 2000 that are of great significance and have a lasting impact on our future
generations. All over the world people are celebrating the year 2000 which heralds the new
millennium. For Canterbury, the year 2000 is a historically significant year celebrating
the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Canterbury Province, the 160th Anniversary of
the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi by Ngai Tahu as well as the arrival of the new
millennium.
Fourteen Advisory Groups, involving nearly 300 people, have been established to identify,
co-ordinate and develop events and projects within specific areas.
Turning Point 2000 -
"history in the making"
Turning Point 2000 is a
unique project that will benefit the community through the development of education,
culture, sport, history, the local economy and business.
The enthusiasm generated by exciting and visionary events
and projects will focus energies and raise funds that would not otherwise eventuate.
The Turning Point 2000 celebrations will be remembered and
treasured by today's children. And Christchurch city and region, from Kaikoura to Waimate,
will reap the benefits long after the year 2000. |
