Christchurch City Council Media Release Wednesday 20 October 1999

Youth Cards Released For Distribution

The Youth information Cards produced by the Christchurch Youth Council and supported by the Christchurch City Council have been distributed and all the original points of distribution have been sent a disclaimer.

Tony Gemmill, acting Community Relations Manager of Christchurch City Council, explains that many of the cards were already in circulation, "it has become apparent that most of the youth cards have already been distributed. Only 4000 remain.

"We also wanted to be seen to support the excellent initiative of the Christchurch Youth Council and to distribute the information for young people contained in the cards.

"Christchurch City Council is politically neutral and we have sent a clear disclaimer out with the remaining cards, explaining that Council does not support any political party. This disclaimer has been sent to all points where the card was being distributed from."

The purpose of this notice is to clarify the following:

The Christchurch Youth Council does not endorse any one political party

The Youth Infopack has been developed as a resource for young people. We deeply regret that the publication includes political advertising, which may be misinterpreted as Youth Council’s endorsement of one political party. This is certainly not the case. On reflection it was clearly a mistake to seek advertising sponsorship from political parties.

The Youth Council and Youth Advocate apologise for this error of judgement.
