Christchurch City Council Media Release 14 October 1999

Planning Review Of Avon

A report is to be prepared by the Christchurch City Council on integrated planning along the River Avon within the four avenues.

This arose after the chairwoman of the Canterbury-Westland branch of the Institute of Landscape Architects, Claire Findlay, told the Council’s environment committee that her members had for a number of years expressed concern about the lack of overall "vision or management strategy or plan for the Avon corridor, particularly in the inner city.

"There appears to be no overall vision for the river corridor’s integrated management…" she said.

Members wanted everything within the corridor to be integrated and not planned in isolation of each other. A balance was wanted in all aspects, she said.

Cr Sue Wells said the sentiments also applied to the Heathcote River.

The committee decided to get an initial report on an integrated management and vision strategy for the Avon within in the four avenues.
