A civil engineer has been appointed as the Christchurch City Councils City Streets manager.
He is Stephen Matheson, at present a unit leader of the councils Works Operations Unit. Mr Matheson, 50, will succeed Mark Gordon who will leave at the end of November to work with a private engineering company.
Mr Mathesons appointment was announced today by the City Manager, Mike Richardson, who said Mr Matheson emerged as the leading contender from a strong pool of contenders for the position.
Mr Matheson joined the Christchurch City Council in late 1989 when local government amalgamation took place. Prior to this he led the design division of the Christchurch Drainage Board.
In the 15 years prior to this Mr Matheson worked for engineering consultants in London and in New Zealand, mostly on engineering design and feasibility studies on civil and structural engineering projects.
These included design of support structures for North Sea oil rigs, hydro-electric schemes, and structural design of buildings in reinforced concrete.
