New Brighton Pier Fireworks Extravaganza, 9.30pm, Friday 5 November 1999
Residents of Christchurch will be treated to a spectacular fireworks display at this years New Brighton Pier Fireworks Extravaganza on Guy Fawkes night, Friday 5 November.
Organised by the Christchurch City Council, the spectacular display will begin at 9.30pm. Plenty of entertainment will be on offer beforehand at the New Brighton Carnival. The Carnival will feature amusement rides, dance displays, wandering musicians, stilt walkers and circus demonstrations from 3pm through to the start of the fireworks.
The display itself will feature 497 starshells - the fireworks that produce enormous bursts of colour and noise as well as dozens of multi shot mines, tiger tails and 72 roman candles, including the biggest in New Zealand.
The event is an annual highlight of the Showtime Canterbury festival and is expected to draw around 20,000 spectators. Due to the large number of people likely to travel from throughout the city to New Brighton for the event, the Christchurch City Council is providing free bus transport to alleviate potential traffic hold ups.
