Things are changing rapidly on the site of the Fendalton Service Centre.
A number of trees close to the building have been moved or relocated, including a splendid palm tree which was growing in an internal courtyard of the building. Lifted out by crane, it is now in a new home at Ferrier Park in Avonhead.
Next door on the edge of Jeffreys Park, a temporary service centre building is nearing completion, while the old building and rear car park are being closed off in preparation for the start of construction.
All this is another exciting step towards the reconstruction of the service centre in a new building shared with the Fendalton Library. The service centre team will be open for business in its temporary accommodation on 8 November. Demolition of the old service centre building is planned to commence on 9 November. It will take about three weeks to clear the site before building can begin.
While the service centre is in its temporary location, the Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board will meet in the boardroom of the Sockburn Service Centre until further notice.
The new library and service centre building is due for completion in June 2000.
