Architecture Awards for New Brighton Library
New Brighton Library, located in the Christchurch City Council New Brighton Pier Building, is the proud recipient of two prestigious architecture awards.
Presented to architect Andrew Barclay of Architecture Warren and Mahoney at a ceremony on Tuesday 2 November. The library's interior design received the NZIA Resene Colour Award for Architecture, while the pier building was awarded the NZIA Resene Branch Award for Architecture.
The convenor of the awards commented on how the bright warm colours of the furniture, selected wall panels and collage-style carpets within the library provide a wonderful complement to the muted tones of concrete and steel. The building was complimented on its nautical imagery with its visual links to the memorial clock tower and Monterey Cypress providing a striking civic landmark.
"Both the local community and Christchurch City Council can be justifiably proud of these awards," said New Brighton Community Librarian, Susan Colemen. "They also reinforce the positive feedback we have received from the public commenting on the stunning building and fabulous library."
Popularity of the new library is unprecedented with 199,000 visitors since its doors opened in late July. The library is open seven days as week: Monday Friday 9am-6pm, and Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm.
