New idea to calm traffic
Residents of Tuckers Road in Northcote are about to test a new way to reduce the high speeds of traffic on their road. With a history of speeding vehicles and the entrance to the local primary school on the road, the Council has decided to try a new approach to permanently reduce the dangerous speeds of traffic. David Engwicht, an expert on radical ways to tackle problem streets without making physical changes, will visit Christchurch on 10 and 11 November to run seminars at Northcote Primary School for local residents and pupils. Mr Engwicht will explain his “traffic calming” plan. It challenges the assumption that motorists have automatic priority on our roads and encourages residents to reclaim their streets by beautifying and spending more time out on the street. Tuckers Road is seen as an ideal site for testing the concept and Mr Engwicht will be helping residents to come up with workable solutions to the traffic problem– such as reducing traffic congestion around the school by encouraging kids join the walking school bus, a concept proposed by Mr Engwicht which has since been picked up around the world. After the seminars, a project team will set up at Northcote School for a two days (12- 13 November) to develop a traffic calming scheme for Tuckers Road. When the final design is complete the Council will start work on the “new-look” for Tuckers Road. |
