Sculptor in sister city win

City sculptor Doug Neil has won a competition organised by Kurashiki, a Japanese sister city of Christchurch. It was the first time Christchurch sculptors had been invited to take part in the event. Mr Neil’s work, made from 16 tonne of granite in 5m columns, will remain in Japan. The win includes a $100,000 prize.

Mr Neil’s sister city connections also include Seattle where he was born and Adelaide, where he got the granite for his winning Kurashiki sculpture. Another of his recent sculptures, a carved seating arrangement, can be seen in the Sister Cities Seattle Garden at Halswell Quarry Park.
