Jellicoe St most likely pipe route

Jellicoe Street, which runs east from South New Brighton Park (the Domain) to the sea, has been named by the Council as the most likely route for a new pipeline to carry the city’s treated wastewater out to sea.

The decision to identify a preferred option was made at last month’s Council meeting. It was done to give more certainty to the residents of the six streets which were being looked at as possible pipeline routes. The other streets were Beatty, Caspian, Godwit, Heron and Bridge.

More work will now be done by Council staff and consultants on the Jellicoe Street option, including a meeting with surrounding residents on 7 May and talking to individual property owners along the street. A final report on the issue will be put to the Council in July.

The Council’s decision last month says that the street that is finally chosen as the pipe routeshould be left in better shape after the work is done. It also suggested that the Council’s Living Streets principles should be used in planning for the reconstruction.

If Jellicoe Street is selected and construction goes ahead, it is proposed that the Domain will be used as a staging area to assemble lengths of pipeline. The Council decided it too should ultimately be improved with restoration and enhancement, in recognition of the inconvenience to the South New Brighton community.

  • Have your say: The last day for submissions on the pipe route is 20 June...More information about the Ocean Outfall project is available on the web, at www.ccc.govt.nz/OceanOutfall
