Herbicides: take care

The Council’s tree staff are noticing some large trees around the city which have been effected badly by broadleaf herbicides and they want to warn people to take care. “One man called me who had killed his 50-year-old walnut,” says Tree Officer Dieter Steinegg.

“Some well meaning people use broadleaf herbicides to get rid of weeds in places like street berms and on their private properties, but don’t realise they can actually kill mature trees with it. If I was asked, I’d say stick to proven lawncare products rather than the broad-spectrum brushkillers or if it’s just the odd dandelion here and there, use a knife.”
