Domain will be improved if used for outfall work

South Brighton Domain will be improved rather than damaged in the long term if Jellicoe Street is finally chosen as the pipeline route, says the engineer leading the city’s Ocean Outfall project.

John Moore says that reports of permanent and total destruction to the domain are unjustified.

“Residents are worried that the pipeline would cut a wide swathe through the trees, exposing Jellicoe Street to nor’ westers and leaving an unsightly gap, but we’ll do our utmost to keep the number of trees felled to an absolute minimum,” Mr Moore says.

At a meeting in early June, URS senior principle Cliff Tipler explained to local residents that the pipeline route could in fact be “bent” around significant obstructions.

If the Council does finally select Jellicoe Street the domain would be used as the pipe- stringing area, meaning closure of parts of it for up to 18 months.

"Once construction is finished, there will be an opportunity to redesign, replant and generally enhance the park so that it will be left, not as it was before, but as a much better recreational area for the community," says Mr Moore. The Council has also agreed to reconstruct the street that is finally selected as a 'Living Street'.
