Crusaders score with young readers

Local sporting heroes the Canterbury Crusaders helped spur city school children to read more than 87,000 books as part of Christchurch City Libraries’ Reading Crusade. More than 7200 children from 122 primary and intermediate schools took part, each reading their choice of 12 Super Titles. More than half the entries were from boys.

Teachers say the scheme encouraged non-readers to become involved in reading. Annette Williams of Christchurch City Libraries, who initiated the event, says, “We know from our own experience that it is often more difficult to attract boys to reading, so to see so many completing 12 books indicates the influence of sporting heroes as role models.”
