Sumner, Scarborough signs

New public health warning signs have been put up at Sumner and Scarborough beaches warning of the danger of eating shellfish from these beaches. They add to the signs already erected around the Estuary. Water-quality samples taken last summer show it is likely that standards for shellfish harvesting are sometimes breached at these beaches.

City Council Operations and Maintenance Manager Mike Bourke says it is well known that shellfish from most parts of the Estuary are unsuitable for eating. The latest testing, coupled with new national assessment methods, has now shown that water at Sumner and Scarborough beaches at times is also unsuitable for shellfish harvesting. There is no concern about other Christchurch beaches, he says.
