Sisterly roundabout

The flags of Christchurch’s six sister cities, put up in 2000 on the roundabout at the Memorial Avenue and Orchard Road junction, now have a sign. The 3.4m by 1m Sister Cities Roundabout sign was installed last month. Twenty-four pupils from Merrin School, who next year will visit Christchurch’s Korean sister city of Songpa-gu, dressed in Korean national costume to mark the occasion.

City Council International Relations Coordinator Dave Adamson says the idea of the flags was to raise the profile of Christchurch’s sister city links around the world. “It’s an appropriate location for the flags, because they catch the eye of incoming visitors to the city. The sign, facing the airport, marks the final stage of the project,” he says.
