Garden City image key, survey says

A survey in the Hagley/Ferrymead ward of 2000 households highlights the importance of retaining our Garden City image.

Nearly 98 per cent of respondents in the March 2002 survey say they think it is important to Christchurch, with 22 per cent claiming our Garden City image is what makes Christchurch unique. A significant proportion also say they think visitors identify with it and that it reflects community pride.

Almost 60 per cent of respondents identify features such as our public parks, private gardens and rivers as the meaning of the Garden City image. In a question asking to describe the image seen when flying over the city, visions of trees, greenery, hills, sea, river, open space and parks predominate.

The information will be used in the Christchurch City Council Parks and Waterways Unit’s evaluation of our Garden City image and many of the initiatives suggested for further enhancement will be incorporated into the future planning of our open space system.
