Charleston Reserve re-opens

Charleston Reserve re-opens
Community involvement: Planning between the City Council and the Charleston community won national acclaim.

Charleston Reserve’s re-opening follows months of consultation, planning and building works by the Charleston community and the City Council.

A neighbourhood plan for Charleston outlines a five-year programme of improvements with the aim of retaining and building on the area’s physical and social character and encouraging community ownership.

As part of the plan, the Council agreed to upgrade the play equipment, landscaping and seating within the reserve. As well, new planting, fencing, gates, seating, picnic table and play equipment have been installed and the lighting improved to enhance safety.

A special feature is a moulded concrete seat featuring a colourful Charleston sign and tile artwork designed by Year 8 children from Phillipstown School.

The reserve’s old play fort, which no longer met safety standards, has been replaced with a modern version of the historic Charleston Cobb and Co stagecoach horses. The company’s stables used to be in the area.

The Council’s Urban Design team won a top planning award in April for its consultation and public involvement in developing the Charleston Neighbourhood Plan.
