Earlier this month, survey forms were mailed to a sample of Christchurch residents asking them to respond by the end of the month. It is hoped that up to several thousand completed questionnaires will be returned.

The survey was jointly commissioned by Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury and Christchurch International Airport Limited.

It focuses on noise from a variety of sources, including industrial premises, major traffic thoroughfares, aircraft, and general neighbourhood activities.

Terry Moody of the Council’s policy team says many units within the Council will find the results useful for planning. They will also be useful in situations where issues are to be dealt with under the Resource Management Act.

“This is the first time that the Council has undertaken a survey like this,” Terry Moody says.

“Local research of this type is much more useful than making assumptions based on international data.”
