Artists to open doors

Artists to open doors

As a highly successful event in European cities, ART BEAT gives the public an opportunity to venture into artists’ studios to engage in the creative process, be it sculpture, graphics, ceramics, painting or photography. The aim is to demystify the artist and the work that takes place in studios around the city.

Young, old, emerging and established artists will open their working studios from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 23 and Sunday, 24 February, 2002.As they work in their various art forms, they will be available for discussion.

“People will be able to talk to the artists directly and ask detailed questions about their work, such as why they have used a certain colour or have chosen a particular style,” says organiser Ioan Grigore.“This is something which usually you can’t do at a gallery and something which will help people in understanding the process of creation.”

Over 30 studios around the city are involved, with many in the central city area. From 13 February, a map, outlining the studio locations, will be available from Christchurch City Libraries and Council Service Centres. During the ART BEAT weekend, a bus will be circulating between studios for ease of transport.

The organisers,Your Studio Trust, have the support of The Central City Revitalisation Project and Creative New Zealand through its Creative Communities Funding Scheme.
