Lisa Graham displays her medals from recent events. Her next big competition will be the national championships.
One of the youngest people to receive a grant under the Shirley-Papanui Community Board Youth Development Scheme is 14-year-o old Lisa Graham.

Lisa received funding in August 2000 to attend her first international judo competition in Australia. Lisa did well, winning a bronze medal in her weight division at the Victorian Open and a silver at the NSW Open.

Lisa would ultimately like to compete for New Zealand in the Commonwealth and Olympic games, so this tour gave her valuable experience in training with other clubs overseas, and competing with international competitors in not one but two world-class events. And she won two medals.

Lisa has gone on to win three gold medals in the Junior Pacific International Open held in Auckland over the 2001 Easter break, and has again been selected for the New Zealand team tour to Australia in August 2001.

The training and preparation that Lisa has undertaken has paid off with her successes, and the Shirley-Papanui Community Board, which set up the scheme, is pleased to have contributed a small part to Lisa’s achievements.

The scheme was set up to offer financial assistance for the personal development of young people in Shirley and Papanui.

Certain criteria apply. For example, applicants must be aged between 12 and 25 years, and the project should have an obvious benefit of the young person and if possible, the wider community.

This year, grants have been awarded to young people for attendance at the following events: 2000 Pan Pacific Youth Exchange in Osaka, 2000 International Judo Development Pacific Squad Tour to Australia, 2001 Cultural Tour to France, 2001 STS Youth Exchange to France, and the 2001 Excel School of Performing Arts.
