New Cultural Centre is for all

multi-cultural centre

Three buildings — one a former church — will form a new multi-cultural centre in Gilberthorpes Road, Hei Hei.

The centre, to be known as Te Whare o Nga Whetu, will reflect the multi-cultural mix of the community and its needs.

The development of a community facility is long overdue in the Broomfield area, says the Community Advocate, Martin Maguire.

It is hoped the new centre will provide a community focus and serve the influx of new residents over the next five to 10 years.

The protocol for the centre is Maori and the kaupapa (purpose) is to encourage a sharing of cultures, skills and knowledge.

The Christchurch City Council bought the Presbyterian Church building for the establishment of the centre and two other large buildings, which were moved to the site to form the three-sided centre.

These two buildings have been painted inside and out ready for opening on 20 May.

Parking areas are at the front and rear. Also at the rear is a landscaped area.

While the centre is essentially for local community use, other organisations will be able to use the facilities.

Organisations wanting to use the centre should contact Martin Maguire, ph 941 6501.
