Brooklands' new skate ramp a hit

More than 300 people turned out for the recent 'Skatejam'
Brooklands’ new skate ramp is proving popular with locals. More than 300 people turned out for the recent "Skatejam" at the ramp.
Brooklands’ new skate ramp has proved to be a hit since it was opened.

Despite the weather being overcast with the threat of rain, the turnout for the SkateJam on Sunday, 3 March was roughly estimated at 300-400 residents from the north-east districts.

The purpose of the event, other than to have a really good time, was to officially open the new skate ramp in Brooklands Domain.

The chairwoman of the Shirley-Papanui Community Board, Yvonne Palmer, started the ball (or skate) rolling by declaring the skate ramp open.

Park rangers sizzled sausages while everyone enjoyed the sounds of the local band.

The day also featured freestyle BMX demonstrations and a great deal of skating.

Local youth are highly enthusiastic about the new facility, so much so that the Community Recreation Adviser included a skate workshop in the April holiday programme.
