UpDate 96, the state of the environment monitoring report for Christchurch City prepared by the Christchurch City Council.

Total Population Growth [2]

In the first half of this decade there was a dramatic increase in the number of people in Christchurch. Between 1991 and 1996 the City’s total population increased by just over 21,000 people or 7.2 percent, from 292,858 to 313,969 people. Nationally the total population grew by 6.6 percent.

The rate of population increase experienced between 1991 and 1996 departed significantly from the City’s previous growth pattern. For example, during the period 1986-1991, the City’s total population increased by 6,257 people or 2.2 percent. While growth in the previous five years, from 1981-1986, was also relatively low at 8,643 people or 3 percent.

Between 1991 and 1996, Christchurch experienced the third highest numeric population growth of all the local authorities in the country behind Auckland City (38,002) and Manukau (28,430). Christchurch City also recorded the greatest numeric growth in the South Island (Table 1.1).
