Foreword
This the third "state of the environment" monitoring report for Christchurch City prepared by the Christchurch City Council.
The report presents historical and current information (for the year to June 1996) about many aspects of the City people, its natural and physical environment and economy. It is not intended to be a technical report but is designed to provide community representatives and decision makers with timely information on trends and issues in the wider environment of Christchurch. It will also be made available to others who are interested in information relating to the City.
The information used in Christchurch City Update was obtained from a range of central government organisations, the Canterbury Regional Council, business groups and from sources within the Christchurch City Council.
Most of the information in the report is available on an annual basis. Where data is not available annually, such as the Census of Population and Dwellings, the most up to date information is reported.
"State of environment monitoring" is still in its infancy both nationally and locally. It is anticipated that future reports will evolve as appropriate standards for indicators are further developed. Future reports will also continue to reflect topical issues of concern to City residents and the changing information needs of community representatives.
