Two Quarterfinals for Christchurch

4 September 2008

Christchurch is absolutely thrilled at news the city will host two quarterfinal games for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Mayor Bob Parker says that the decision to award Christchurch two quarterfinals gives the city an opportunity to play its part in what will be an unforgettable experience for the region.

“It’s a recognition of Canterbury’s rugby heritage as well as being an expression of confidence in our region.  It’s also a boost for the whole of the South Island.

“We now have the opportunity to give tens of thousands of visitors a taste of the South Island and to help create a lasting tourism legacy for the whole country.  At the same time, a new generation of Cantabrians will be encouraged to become participants or lifelong followers of our national game - rugby,” says Mr Parker.

“We are extremely grateful for the opportunity we are being given and look forward to helping to make this the best ever Rugby World Cup”

“Today’s announcement is a tribute to the work of the bid partners - and in particular Canterbury Rugby Football Union, Vbase and the Christchurch City Council.  Now we really get to roll our sleeves up and make this a most incredibly successful event for everyone in the region,” says Mr Parker.

“By 2011 Christchurch will have some of the very best stadium facilities in the country and it will be great to show rugby fans from all over the world how Christchurch and Canterbury can host a world class rugby event in an atmosphere of warm hospitality and friendly sporting rivalry.
