Pioneer closes Fitness Centre for 16-day refurbishment

4 September 2008

Pioneer Sport and Recreation Centre will close its Fitness Centre for a 16-day refurbishment from 22 September. The Fitness Centre will re-open at 6am on Wednesday, 8 October.

All other facilities at Pioneer will remain open during this time.

During the closure, the Fitness Centre will be repainted, new carpet laid, an electrical upgrade undertaken and new audio-visual equipment installed, says Centre Manager Ian Whitehead.

"The aerobics area will remain open until the close of business on 28 September when it will be closed for nine days. It will also re-open on 8 October."

Work began late May redeveloping the area of Pioneer previously occupied by its three squash courts to offer customers better cardio, weights and stretching areas, a new Mind Body Room for group exercise and a Spin Room.

Exercise classes had been at capacity and there was a lack of space to enable the Centre to expand these services to offer new classes and better meet the community’s needs. Fitness Centre members had also been cancelling memberships, being turned off using the facility because of crowding and having to wait to use equipment.

"With the refurbished and new areas opening on 8 October, customers will be provided with bigger and better facilities.

"The whole community will be invited to experience the range of new equipment and classes on offer in the expanded Fitness Centre and new Mind Body Room and Spin Room during the Grand Opening Community Open Day on Saturday 11 October," Mr Whitehead says.

"During the two weeks the Fitness Centre is closed, customers with multi-memberships, fitness memberships and aerobic/fitness concession cards are invited to use – at no additional cost – the facilities at Jellie Park, Centennial and QEII."

He says all memberships will be extended two weeks to compensate for the closure.

"We apologise for the disruption while this work is undertaken and thank everyone for their patience and continued support during this time."
