Recycling wheelie bin deliveries begin next week
31 October 2008
Deliveries begin next Monday (3 November) of the 133,000 recycling wheelie bins for Christchurch’s new Kerbside Collection for domestic waste.
From Monday 3 November to 19 December, the recycling wheelie bins will be delivered to all city and Lyttelton residents, with Akaroa and Little River residents receiving all three wheelie bins from 12 to 23 January 2009.
Christchurch and Lyttelton residents will receive their rubbish and organics (food and green waste) wheelie bins from 26 January to 27 March 2009.
"With 400,000 bins to be delivered to 133,000 homes throughout Christchurch, it was impractical to deliver all three bins at once," says Council City Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison.
"The Christmas/summer holidays also meant the only viable option was to split the bin roll-out."
By delivering the new recycling bin in November/December, he says residents can start using their recycling bin as soon as the new materials recovery plant being built in Parkhouse Road is finished late January.
"This way we can immediately start the service and quickly be working towards achieving our goal of collecting 30 per cent more recyclable material."
Residents will begin using their new recycling wheelie bin from 2 February. Friday 30 January will be the last day the current recycling crate will be collected. Residents are invited to keep the crate for other purposes around the home.
From February 2009 recycling will become a fortnightly collection.
